Benue State Police Command has directed all the divisional police officers in the state to ensure the patrol of churches, government facilities, and motor parks during the yuletide season.
The Commissioner of Police, George Chuku, gave the order in Makurdi.
He also ordered the deployment of police officers across the state for the yuletide season and to ensure the ban on the use of knockouts and fireworks, stating that the law against them was still in force.
This was contained in a statement issued by the command spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, on Thursday.
Anene said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, George Chuku, gave the directive to all the divisional police officers.
The statement read in parts, “The CP directed this in a conference where all area commanders, divisional police officers, and tactical commanders were in attendance.
“He warned all officers to ensure the security of lives and property within their area of responsibility, to ensure that they secure all entry and exit routes, and to carry out intensive motorised patrols of government facilities, churches, parks, and densely populated areas where people go to celebrate.
“In addition, CP warns against the sale and use of ‘knockouts’ and ‘fireworks’ and hereby calls on traditional rulers, religious leaders, guidance, and parents to warn their children, wards, and faithful to refrain from such practises.”
The CP also advised groups displaying masquerades to be very careful so that they wouldn’t infringe on other people’s rights.
Additionally, emergency numbers for easy communication were released: 0806 600 6475, 0706 737 4913, 0805 749 3117.
The CP wished the people of the state a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. He also assured residents of his commitment to securing the state.”
