The Kano Scholars Assembly (KSA) has said that a selective approach to justice undermines the very foundations of the nation’s democracy and threatens to turn the country into a breeding ground for a one-party system.
This is just as the chieftain of the All Progressive Congress ( APC) in Kano State, Honourable Seyi Olorunnisola, has called for fervent prayers ahead of the Supreme Court judgement, saying the prevailing peace must be sustained.
Making this known on Wednesday, the spokesman of the KSA, Alhaji Abdurrazak Baba, while addressing newsmen in Kano, further condemned what they term as injustice and compromise within the judiciary.
He then expressed dismay over what he termed disparities in judgements involving the ruling party against other opposition parties, saying this poses a danger to the nation’s democracy.
However, the body then warned the judiciary against the dangers of delivering varying judgements in similar cases as well as impartiality, saying it was detrimental to the integrity of the judicial system of the country
The KSA further warned against an impending loss of public confidence in the fairness and independence of the judiciary if the situation is left unchecked.
Baba therefore stated that “we cannot allow the sacrifices of our forefathers and the principles of democracy to be eroded by political expediency.”
He said that “the people of Kano State have long enjoyed a tradition of peace and stability, and we will not stand idly by as some individuals attempt to jeopardise the hard-earned tranquilly of our state,” the spokesman stated.
The group finally said that Nigerians have the right to know the truth and called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the varying judgements issued in the Kano Governorship election tussle Appeal Court judgement.
He added that “the people have the right to know the truth, and only through transparency and accountability can we restore faith in our judicial system.”.
In another development, a chieftain of All Progressive Congress( APC) in Kano State, Honourable Seyi Olorunsola, has called on the teeming masses of the state, irrespective of religion or tribal affiliations, to always pray for peace ahead of judgement to be delivered by the Supreme Court in the ongoing governorship tussle.
He stated that peace in the state is more paramount than the selfish ego of any individual or group of people, adding that the prevailing peace should not be allowed to be truncated upon
Disclosing this on Wednesday in Kano, Hon. Olorunsola, at a prayer conference organised by the non-indigenous Christian community, gathered to intercede on behalf of Dr Nasir Gawuna, seeking divine intervention for the reclamation of his mandate.
The APC stalwart expressed gratitude to the judiciary for their steadfast commitment to the rule of law thus far.
Olorunsola then acknowledged the crucial role the judiciary plays in upholding justice and encouraged them to remain vigilant until justice is unequivocally served.
This emphasis on the judiciary reflects the belief in the importance of a fair and impartial legal process, free from external influences.
He also cautioned against potential interference from external figures, specifically mentioning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and implored that sentiments and emotions should not sway him in the face of NNPP propaganda attempting to undermine the APC administration.
It underscores the belief that a fair and just resolution to the electoral dispute in Kano will contribute to the overall stability and progress of the nation.
They envision a Kano State and a Nigeria where peace prevails, prosperity abounds, and the democratic principles that underpin the nation’s governance are upheld.
Hon. Olorunsola’s call for a prayer conference reflects not only the intensity of the political situation in Kano but also the significance of faith and unity in times of uncertainty.
