Owu Baptist Church, Totoro, Abeokuta, the place of worship of former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is marking its 120 years of existence in the spread of the gospel of Christ.
The chairman of the anniversary committee, Nathaniel Oyedele, alongside notable members of the church, at a press conference, said the church has contributed in no small measure to the spiritual growth of its parishioners, welfare, and social well-being of its immediate environment.
He explained that the church had contributed to the development of the state and Nigeria by training nation-builders.
Oyedele said the church has played a bigger role in the educational development of the state through the establishment of prominent schools that have produced the likes of Obasanjo, the late Chief MKO Abiola, and the late Chief Bola Ajibola among others.
The Deacon Emeritus said, “Baptist Church is a very good denomination. If I take only this Abeokuta, We have Baptist Boys’ High School, the Baptist Girls’ High at Idi-Aba, and other schools.
“You know that out of these schools we have, Obasanjo is an example of the nation building. He was at the Baptist Boys High School. He was the President of this country and Head of State as a soldier.
“There are so many of them, Prince Bola Ajibola and MKO Abiola. The Baptist Boys High School trained them to become nation builders.”
Some of the activities lined up for the anniversary between October 13 and October 22 are charity visitation, rally, anniversary lecture, and launching of the legacy projects.
He added that the President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Dr Israel Akanji, and Obasanjo, among other dignitaries, are expected to be in attendance at the grand finale of the anniversary and fundraising for some proposed projects.
