My 30-year-old son was shot by some hoodlums in the thigh a few days ago. Although some of the pellets from the gunshot have been removed, a few others are still lodged in the thigh muscle. The attending doctor advised that they be left alone to avoid any injury to the thigh during removal. I want to know if this is a good decision.

Pellets that are deep inside the body tissue and will not cause any injury to the body should be left alone. This is more important if attempts to remove them may cause more harm than good. It is important however to arrange periodic x-ray in order to adequately monitor the progress of the pellets in the body. The patient should also be given a medical certificate when travelling to avoid unnecessary delays by security personnel during airport screening.
