Getting to the top of her career and staying relevant for a long time mean so much to rising actress, Seun Awonusi. As she continues to build on the current momentum around her craft, she spoke with SEGUN ADEBAYO on how she has managed to keep her career afloat.
At what point did you begin to see acting as a serious engagement that you can’t do without?
Since my first time acting, I recognised the significance of this craft as I experienced a deep sense of satisfaction. The constant cheers and praises from those on set affirmed my natural talent, reinforcing my commitment to take acting seriously ever since.
You seem to be coming up gradually but you have not been celebrating your wins enough. Do you fear you may lose the momentum?
You are correct about not celebrating my wins enough; I must admit that I haven’t been celebrating my achievements as much as I ought to. I think It’s because I’m always focused on the next goal and don’t take the time to appreciate what I’ve accomplished. It’s something I need to work on and I’ll make a conscious effort to celebrate my wins and relish the fruits of my labour moving forward.
How long did it take you to get to the level you are today?
My journey to where I am now has been a challenging one that demanded a significant amount of time, dedication and determination. I am humbled and grateful for how far I have come and I attribute all of it to the grace of God.
The new series on African Magic seems to be portraying you in a different light. How did you get the role?
I did a monologue audition and I got the role. It was not as simple as it seems but I did my job and God crowned the efforts.
How challenging was it for you to get into the character?
While the role I played in the film was not particularly difficult, I initially had some reservations when I first read the script. It was a type of character I had never portrayed before and I was uncertain of how I would execute it. Nevertheless, I had confidence in my ability and when we began shooting, everything started to fall into place. It was a surreal experience to see each scene come together to form a brilliant work of art and I am incredibly proud of myself and other actors for bringing the story to life on screen.
You are a pretty woman who would no doubt attract attention from men constantly. How do you deal with this pressure?
It’s normal to get advances from men because of course, I’m beautiful, so whenever someone’s attention makes me uncomfortable or pressured, I set boundaries and communicate my discomfort in a very polite way.
Would you settle down with an actor colleague when it is time to get married?
I don’t think so but let me just go with the phrase “Never say Never.”
You have a good command of English as well. But why are you not getting roles in the English speaking version of the industry?
Thanks for the compliment, I actually got roles in the English speaking industry, it’s just not as much as the Yoruba industry because that’s where I started from.
What makes you different from others in the industry?
What makes me special is my unique talents, skills, the pieces of my personality, my life experiences, knowledge and emotions. Let me also add that I’m witty, smart, beautiful, honest, goofy, playful and a respectful lady who loves life, I treat everyone how I’ll love to be treated.
