Detty December has become a cultural and economic phenomenon, drawing thousands of tourists and Nigerians in the diaspora to Lagos for an electrifying end-of-the-year celebration. However, despite its potential, many believe Nigeria has not fully capitalized on the opportunities the event presents. In an exclusive interview with Tribune Newspaper, travel consultant Michael Ajasi shares his insights on what Nigeria and the Lagos State government could have done better.
Detty December 2024 has come and gone, but many believe Nigeria, particularly Lagos, could have maximized its potential better. What’s your take?
Absolutely! Detty December has grown into a world-class event, attracting tourists, celebrities, and business investors. However, year after year, we see a lack of proper planning and execution in key areas that could elevate the experience and economic impact.
What areas do you think needed better planning?
There are several, but let me highlight the most pressing ones:
1. Infrastructure and Traffic Management: Lagos has some of the worst traffic during Detty December, making it stressful for both tourists and residents. There were no dedicated shuttle services or improved public transport to ease congestion. A city hosting such a massive influx of people should have a proper transit system in place.
2. Security Measures: While there was some security presence, incidents of theft, harassment, and fraud still occurred. The state government could have implemented a more robust security plan with designated tourism police and surveillance in key event areas.
3. Event Coordination: There were many exciting concerts, beach parties, and nightlife activities, but no centralized platform where visitors could find verified information. An official Detty December app or website managed by the Lagos Tourism Board could have streamlined access to tickets, locations, and updates.
4. Hospitality and Accommodation Issues: Many hotels and short-let apartments took advantage of the season by inflating their prices. There were also complaints of substandard services. The government and tourism bodies should introduce rating systems to ensure fair pricing and service delivery.
5. Local Business Engagement: Detty December is a golden opportunity for small businesses, yet many were left out. The state government could have created a marketplace or festival zones where small businesses, food vendors, and artisans could showcase their products to the influx of visitors.
Speaking of business, do you think Lagos missed out on potential revenue?
Without a doubt. Cities like Dubai and Cape Town have mastered the art of making tourism profitable by structuring their events for maximum revenue generation. Lagos could have introduced a special ‘Detty December Tourism Tax’ on hotels and premium event tickets, with funds allocated to improve the tourism sector. Also, international promotion was lacking. Nigeria needs to actively market Detty December as a global festival, not just a local event.
How can the government ensure that Detty December 2025 is better organized?
Here are a few strategies that should be considered:
1. Early Planning: The Lagos State government should start preparations now, working with event organizers, hospitality businesses, and security agencies to create a structured plan.
2. A Centralized Tourism Hub: There should be a digital platform—either an app or website—that provides information on events, transportation, accommodation, and safety tips.
3. Public-Private Partnerships: The government should work with private investors to improve infrastructure, transport, and event sponsorships. Special holiday transport passes could also be introduced to ease movement.
4. Standardized Pricing: There should be regulations on price gouging in the hospitality sector, ensuring that tourists get value for their money without exploitation.
5. Promotion of Cultural Tourism: Lagos should go beyond just concerts and nightlife. Historical sites, art exhibitions, and cultural tours should be incorporated to make the experience richer and more inclusive.
Finally, what’s your advice to travelers planning for Detty December 2025?
Michael Ajasi: Plan early! Book your flights and accommodations ahead of time to avoid price hikes. Stay updated on event schedules, and most importantly, prioritize safety. Lagos is a fantastic city, and with better planning, Detty December 2025 can be the best edition yet.
