SOME Journalists who went on Sunday to monitor the conduct of the gubernatorial primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Bauchi were nearly attacked at the Bakari Dukku Primary and Secondary School along Bank Road in Bauchi metropolis, venue of the elections for Hardo/Dan Iya Ward of Bauchi local government area.
The Journalists, from different media organizations, had gone to the venue to monitor the primary election which was yet to commence as at 3 pm when they visited following claims by one of the aspirants, Muhammad Ali Pate.
Several voters loyal to three of the aspirants contesting against the incumbent Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, who is seeking a second term, had surrounded the Journalists and alleged that the government printed fake ballot papers which were distributed to people to vote in favour of the Governor.
A supporter of one of the aspirants who gave his name only as Danjuma, lamented bitterly that he had been at the venue for about 7 hours but the election did not yet begin adding that voters were not verified but everyone was allowed into the premises for the election.

“The Commissioner of Police addressed us outside and promised us that we will be verified so as to authenticate the cards but nothing like that was done, the gate was just opened for everyone to go in. Many of the cards the voters are carrying are fake APC membership cards. If you check these two cards I am holding in my hand, you’ll notice that the APC logo on the one on my right doesn’t look clear at all because it’s the fake one, as compared to the one on my left which we were given since 2014,” he alleged.
Danjuma further lamented that “Most of the people told us outside that they were given the APC membership cards just this morning which they will use for the election. I have been here since 8 am but this is almost 3 pm, and there is no sense of anything yet. This is not fair and not good for our democracy.”
He further said that “the whole process is not transparent at all, if it is fair, the voters would have been verified. We suspect that there won’t even be election here because some of the Governor’s supporters were even saying that they have won the election already.”
Trouble, however, started when the Journalists approached a former aide of the Governor, Comrade Sabo Mohammed, who is a House of Representatives aspirant, at the venue to react to the allegations.
When the Journalists asked the former aide of the Governor to react and he had barely started answering the first question when a mob of angry supporters of the other three aspirants surrounded them and started shouting “it’s a lie,” it’s a lie” “we don’t agree with what is happening.”
Journalists who noticed that the supporters of the Governor were also coming and sticks were being brandished had to stop the interview and run for their dear lives.
