Oladimeji Omolayo Becky popularly known as Queen Becky Berry is an OAP based in Ibadan. In this interview, she shares her experience on how entertainment is shaping culture and providing opportunities for the youths. Excerpts:
How will you rate the entertainment industry today?
The entertainment industry has evolved tremendously. From the grassroots to the mainstream, the creativity, reach, and impact have grown. Thanks to digital platforms and audience engagement, talents are now being recognised faster and more broadly. I would rate it very high in terms of growth and influence, especially with how it’s shaping culture and providing opportunities.
The industry has been doing very well globally, what is your view on this?
The global recognition of African, particularly Nigerian entertainment is something to be proud of. Our music, films, skits, and even fashion have gained international attention. It shows that our stories, when told authentically, resonate across borders. This growth also encourages local talents to stay consistent and keep improving.
What motivates you to engage in entertainment activities and skit making?
My dear, in Nigeria, if you don’t find a way to laugh, you’ll just be moody for no reason. Honestly, I started skit making as a form of expression and escape, but when I saw people genuinely relating to it and laughing even in tough times, it became a calling. Sometimes, one skit can do what a motivational speaker can’t do in one hour! So I said, why not? Let’s keep the vibes going. Entertainment is therapy, and skit-making is my own small contribution to national healing!
How do you combine this with your radio job?
It’s all about balance and time management. Being an OAP is a platform I cherish, it keeps me grounded and connected to real-time happenings. I ensure my schedule is well-planned to accommodate recordings, shoots, rehearsals, and live sessions. Thankfully, I have a strong support system (My Papi) that helps me stay organised.
What is your next plan?
A lot is cooking! First off, we’re gearing up for the next edition of ‘Laughter Fest’, in December, Ibadan’s signature comedy and entertainment show. This year, we’re going bigger: more acts, more surprises, and a blend of music, comedy, and drama like never before. I’m also working on a short film series tagged ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’ that addresses real-life issues in a humorous but thought-provoking way, it’s something very close to my heart.
