Have you ever written your name in a hurry, then you missed a letter or arranged it wrongly? Yes, your own name. Or just maybe you mistakenly chose the wrong ear for your birthday. If this happened to you while registering for your Unified Tertaiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME), don’t be afraid; it can happen to anyone.

  • Visit a JAMB CBT centre
  • Your documents
  • Create your JAMB profile
  • Pay a fee
  • Fixing your name
  • Fixing your date of birth (DOB)
  • Changing your LGA
  • Post-correction

The thing is, when the data on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) portal is wrong, it can feel like it’s all over for you and that you’ve lost out on your admission year. You might think that you won’t get into university or that your results will be seized.

Well, there is hope for you because JAMB has an icon or tool called Correction of Data. Let’s look at how you can correct your data.

Visit a JAMB CBT centre

It might be a huge mistake for you to try fixing these errors on your own phone or at a random cyber cafe. To change the data on the JAMB portal, you must visit an accredited JAMB Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre or a JAMB professional centre.

It’s safer this way because the establishment wants to be really sure that it’s you making those changes, which is why they will use your fingerprints to confirm your identity.

    Your documents

If you’re trying to change or correct some information on your portal, JAMB needs proof that it’s really you. For your name or birthday, you’ll need your birth certificate or an affidavit.

For your Local Government Area (LGA), you need a letter from your local government office that confirms you are a part of that local government.

Also, there’s the JAMB slip. While you’re considering correcting your data, don’t forget to bring your original JAMB registration slip.

      Create your JAMB profile

If you haven’t created one for yourself, you should because you need to be able to log in. Then go to the official JAMB website, log in with your email and password.

However, if you don’t have one yet, the people at the CBT centre will help you set up your profile.

        Pay a fee

Correcting your data comes at a fee. JAMB charges ₦2,500 to process these changes. You can pay through the portal using your ATM card or by paying at the bank using a Remita code.

It’s also important that you keep your receipt, which is proof that you corrected your data.

          Fixing your name

If your name is misspelt, say “Tola” is spelt as “Tolo” once you have paid and you’re at the JAMB centre, the person in charge will click on “Correction of name” and type in the correct spelling.

Please, ensure you look at it again to be sure it’s the correct spelling this time.

Fixing your date of birth (DOB)

In the grand scheme of things, your date of birth is important for your National Identification Number (NIN) and your school records in the future.

The same method for fixing your name applies only to that; you’ll select the correct day, month, and year. The records on the portal must match your NIN to avoid confusing the computer.

              Changing your LGA

Sometimes, students mistakenly pick the wrong state. So the officer at the centre will click on “Correction of State/LGA.” You will then choose your correct State of Origin and your Local Government Area.

Guess why this is important. Some schools usually give special spots to students from a certain area. So, just imagine what if your LGA were incorrectly written?

                Post-correction

After you finish at the CBT centre, you may not see changes immediately.  Leave the rest to the JAMB headquarters, which receives your requests and approves.

As long as you’ve done the right thing, your request ought to go through.

Above all, you cannot ignore having the wrong data. Fixing your data is important for admission and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). They check your data on the JAMB portal; if it’s wrong, you might/will make little or no progress.

When you follow these steps, you’ll have the correct data on the JAMB portal, and you can be rest assured that you’re on track.
