GitHub, one of the world’s largest code-hosting platforms, suffered a major service disruption on Monday, affecting developers, businesses and software teams around the world.

The outage began at about 1:40pm UTC on Monday, with GitHub reporting degraded performance across several of its services.

Among the affected features are Pull Requests, Issues, Actions, Webhooks and GitHub Copilot, while some users have also experienced problems with the platform’s application programming interface (API).

GitHub’s status page showed elevated error rates affecting web experiences and API traffic, while downloads of repository archives and raw content were also experiencing significant failures.

The disruption is also affecting some enterprise services, including authentication and user-management features used by organisations operating on GitHub Enterprise Cloud.

The outage has caused problems for developers attempting to merge code, run automated tests and deployments through GitHub Actions, track issues or use webhooks to trigger other services.

Independent outage-monitoring platform Downdetector also recorded a sharp increase in reports from users experiencing problems with GitHub.

GitHub said its engineering teams were investigating the incident and carrying out mitigation measures while monitoring the platform for improvements. The company had not immediately disclosed the cause of the disruption or provided a definite timeline for full restoration.

The incident highlights the growing reliance of software developers and businesses on GitHub for storing code, managing projects and automating software development processes.

Users affected by the disruption have been advised to monitor GitHub’s official status page for further updates as engineers work to restore normal service.
