A University of Benin (UNIBEN) lecturer, Professor Godspowe Osaretin Ikuobase, and a 2023 presidential hopeful has condemned the present politicking in Nigeria, which he noted had been commercialised.
Ikuobase, who said he aimed to become the next president under the umbrella of the All Progressives Congress (APC) lamented that those with integrity and the necessary intelligence were few in the nation’s politics.
The Professor of Service Computing, who made the assertion while fielding questions from journalists in Benin City, urged people with integrity, intelligence, energy and proper planning to come into politics so as to enable the nation to get it right politically.
“Politicking presently in Nigeria is unfortunate, it is seen as a business venture as against service to the nation. But we must change the way we politick and choose our leaders,” Professor Ikuobase submitted.
“For us to get its right politically, we must elect people of integrity, intelligence and energy. We must choose knowledge over financial wealth. We need proper planning, core nationalist, a detribalised Nigerians to take the country into political Eldorado,” he advised.
“I want to advise Nigerians that we should not elect powerful leaders but powerful institutions. Older politicians should stay behind the scene and be advisers to the youths,” the university don added.
He disclosed that his choice to contest the forthcoming presidential primaries of the APC was informed by his quest to making positive and developmental strides in the country.
“I am coming to implement the true spirit of the APC which is politics for the grassroots, from the grassroots and by the grassroots. Those pushing to rule the country are only relying on their financial muscles and what they stand to benefit from and are not ready to offer solutions to the country’s problem.
“So I have an agenda which is christened “MEAL” ( maintenance, Electricity and Energy, Agriculture and Leadership) and is aimed at emancipating Nigeria from its political dungeon. We need youth that is educated, that has transcended beyond materialism, that has come to value integrity and excellence above wealth as president, that is the person of Professor Godspower Osaretin Ikuobase,” he canvassed.
Speaking on the issue of banditry in the country, Ikuobase, said that banditry is caused by hunger and unemployment, maintaining that Nigerians are known for peace and hard-working, just as he promised to engage the youths through agriculture if elected.
