The President, Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC) and visitor to Bowen University, Iwo, Rev. Dr Israel Akanji, has declared that the utmost goal of establishing the university was to promote Godliness, excellence, innovation, and leadership education in the Nigerian university system.
He made the statement at the 18th convocation of the university held recently.
Revd Akanji said the convention ensures the appointment of sound leadership to drive the core values of the institution.
Through the grace of God, he said, Bowen University had been producing productive graduates in different disciplines who are Godly and innovative and are capable of impacting their world.
He admonished the 2023 graduating students of the university to be “life givers, hope lifters” and to be the best where the worst has happened in the society.
The pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council of the university, Deaconess Joan O.Ayo (OON), congratulated the graduating students on the successful completion of their academic programmes, assuring them that Bowen had fortified them mentally, emotionally, academically and spiritually to face the world.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Jonathan Babalola, attributed the success of the university to the leadership of the convention and the governing council of the institution, for their contributions and moral support towards the growth and development of the institution since inception.
He noted that Bowen University is committed to raising individuals who are not only rooted in faith, but also equipped to excel in various spheres of life.
This vision, he said, is about fostering an environment where every student who walks through the gates of Bowen University can be nurtured to a Daniel.
He said: “Our nation, as well as the global community at large, would need enlightened, educated, well-prepared and disciplined young men and women who are dedicated to the betterment of our society.
“What the world requires is not a cohort of irresponsible and reckless youths, but a generation that will positively influence and elevate our society.
“Bowen University will carefully evaluate the market demand and align our programmes to meet the needs of our students and the society at large.”
While speaking, the overall best student of the year and a graduate of Economics, Opeyemi Oyelakin, asserted that Bowen University is a leadership training centre where students are exposed to leadership education based on core values of Excellence, Godliness, Innovation and social responsibility.
She said that all undergraduates of the university, irrespective of their disciplines, are undergoing training to be problem solvers.
