BBNaija reunion and dwindling morals among young girls

When the much publicised Big Brother Naija reunion for the lockdown edition started, people were indeed looking forward to a lot of drama, revelations and theatrics across all fan bases.  It is indeed not unexpected that there will be occurrences that the camera failed to capture or the organisers decided not to air.

But the shock many felt at the first few episodes was great. While it is a reality show and one that is rated 18+, there is still a level of decency expected especially from the girls who naturally, the society expects to exhibit a level of decorum and inhibition. And while the issue of equal rights is continually on the front burner, it is not an advocacy geared at counting scores on escapades but a platform to ensure women and young girls have the same opportunities like their male counterparts to explore their potential and attain great heights without being sabotaged because of their gender.

However, the drama at the ongoing reunion is one that has broken all records and given the show an all time image as a show that promotes immorality.  Before now, housemates tried as much as possible to cover up moral lapses, but this year seems to be one that have housemates that do not care what the result of their utterances may be on their teeming fans and stans, many of whom are still impressionable young people that have turned them to mini gods and are willing to follow in their footpaths.

The drama and controversies keep rising and the more the ladies try to show how civilised and unbothered they are in their sexual escapades within and outside the house, the more  many viewers, even the liberal ones, cringe at the seeming degeneration of morals and decency in today’s society. It is quite unimpressive that the girls are comfortable on international television to talk about how they used fellow housemates for sex and how wacky the sex was in their estimation.

“I used you and you didn’t last five minutes or seconds”, “I gave you a blowjob and you didn’t greet me the next morning” and such other lines were a recurring theme during the reunion. They made it seem like the organisers packed them together just to explore their sexuality and boast of how they were the ones that used the guys sexually.

Invariably, to the audience, the show was made to look like a reality show to see who can sleep with who and move on without any feelings or shame.  At the end, only few of the housemates achieved the aim of using the platform to propagate their profession and themselves, others seem to be all about the social media validation and sex appeal. What then have they turned the show into; a brothel-like environment for trysts?

The recent union has put the show in a bad light unlike other editions; one is forced to wonder whether all the escapades are really from the same show we watched. Yes, it is pay television and it is rated 18 but it still puts a burden on the society especially among the female gender that advocates to be seen for their intellectual abilities and ability to do things like the male peers. How do you make men see you beyond the sexual appeal when the only edge some of the ladies displayed was sleeping with the guys and feeling happy that they were the ones that used them?
