KWARA State government has explained reasons for recreation of the Engineering Services department in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development after it was scrapped 35 years ago.
Speaking while receiving an award of appreciation from staff of the department, the state commissioner for Communication, Mrs. Adenike Harriet Afolabi-Oshatimehin, said that the state was poised to go the mechanised way in Agric to increase food production.
“This is a state that is strategically located. There is practically no crop that can’t grow in Kwara state. This is an agrarian state as the larger population of Kwarans are into agriculture. So, why won’t we go the mechanised way? And if we are to go the mechanised way, we need to have an Engineering department in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
“I am thankful to God and Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for a day like this because if I had pushed and he didn’t approve, we won’t have had a day like this where we come together to celebrate this feat”.
The commissioner, who stressed the need for hard-work and dedication to duty, called on the civil servants to continue to be focused on service delivery, saying that reward will come sooner or later.
She disclosed that during her short stint at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development she was focused on leaving the ministry better than she met it.
“Its been turbulent, I wont deny that, it was back and forth before we were able to win the battle. But despite everything, the department has come to stay. That gives me a lot of joy and that’s why I said I’m closedto tears. This is something that was scrapped in 1985 and since then we have not had the department of Engineering in the Ministry of Agriculture”.
The commissioner thereafter dedicated the award to the governor for approving the recreation of the department.
Also speaking, Engineer Oloruntoyin Tunde Zubair, who led the delegation of the Agriculture Engineers said that the visit was to show appreciation to the commissioner for pushing for the recreation of the Agricultural Engineering Services Department after 35years.
