Why we’re going on indefinite strike — Resident doctors

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared the resumption of its total and indefinite strike from midnight on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, over unresolved welfare issues, including unpaid arrears and delays in the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF).

The decision followed an extraordinary National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held virtually on Saturday, where the association assessed the implications of ongoing disputes with the Federal Government on remuneration, training, and healthcare delivery nationwide.

The communiqué was signed by NARD President, Dr Mohammad Usman Suleiman; Secretary-General, Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim; and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim.

NARD highlighted the persistent delay in the payment of promotion and salary arrears owed to its members in several institutions, despite repeated assurances, warning that the situation continues to erode morale within the health sector.

The association also expressed concern over the slow pace of concluding the processes for the disbursement of the 2026 MRTF, noting that the delay undermines the training and professional development of resident doctors.

It further decried the continued delay in the payment of 19 months’ outstanding arrears of the professional allowance, describing it as part of a broader pattern of neglect and insensitivity to the welfare of doctors.

While reiterating its rejection of the Federal Government’s reversal of the reviewed Professional Allowance Table (PAT), the council demanded the immediate settlement of all outstanding arrears and the prompt release of the MRTF.

NARD subsequently directed all its members nationwide to withdraw their services completely from April 7 until the government demonstrates a “clear, concrete, and verifiable commitment” to addressing the issues raised.

The association also instructed its leadership at all levels to commence coordinated advocacy and lawful media engagements to ensure compliance, urging members to remain calm, united, and resolute.
