We’ll tackle digital divide to drive sustainable devt — NGF

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, emphasised the critical role of subnational governments in accelerating sustainable development by closing the digital divide.

Speaking on the theme “Accelerating Sustainable Development: Harnessing Technology & Partnerships for SDGs” during a high-level session at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Subnational Governments Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) meeting in New York, he called for urgent action to bridge the digital gap and foster inclusive development across Nigeria’s states.

AbdulRazaq highlighted that subnational governments, particularly in Nigeria, are central to delivering essential services, from education to healthcare and climate resilience. “For us, achieving the SDGs is not just a national priority; it is a subnational imperative,” AbdulRazaq said.

“The SDGs are about transforming lives, and that transformation happens most effectively at the grassroots level, where government is closest to the people.”

The Kwara State governor underscored the importance of leveraging technology to accelerate progress toward the SDGs, noting that Nigeria has witnessed the transformative power of digital platforms in improving agricultural value chains, boosting food security, and enhancing transparency through e-governance.

However, AbdulRazaq warned of the risks posed by a widening digital divide, which could leave rural communities behind.

To address this, the NGF has prioritized investments in digital infrastructure and literacy across all regions, ensuring that both urban and rural populations benefit from technological advances.

The NGF Chairman also highlighted the necessity of partnerships in achieving the SDGs. He called for stronger collaboration between subnational governments, the private sector, civil society, and international organizations to scale successful interventions.

“The SDGs require a whole-of-society approach, and subnational governments are the bridge between global ambitions and local realities,” he stated, urging international partners to deepen their engagement with state governments, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria.

As the 2030 deadline for the SDGs approaches, Governor AbdulRazaq stressed the urgency of ramping up efforts, especially in light of setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In closing, the NGF boss noted that the discussions at the session underscored the importance of collaboration, innovation, and strategic thinking as we collectively strive to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs at the subnational level.

Acknowledging the contributions from thought leaders and experts across three key panels, each addressing critical pillars of sustainable development, he said, “The conversations have not only deepened our understanding but also given us a clear sense of what must be done to turn our collective ambitions into tangible results.”

Looking ahead, Governor AbdulRazaq emphasized the urgency of action as the 2030 deadline for achieving the SDGs fast approaches. He stressed the role of technology as an enabler, saying, “We must leverage the digital revolution to advance our goals,” and highlighted the power of partnerships in overcoming challenges. He argued that localizing the SDGs is essential for their success, emphasizing the importance of finding local solutions to global challenges.

“Our commitment must be to bring the SDGs home, embedding them in our local policies, programs, and practices.”

“As I conclude, I would like to reiterate that the Nigeria Governors’ Forum remains committed to driving sustainable development at the subnational level.

“We are determined to harness the power of technology and partnerships to accelerate progress, and we stand ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to achieve the SDGs for our people.

“Let us leave here today with renewed energy and focus, knowing that the responsibility of creating a sustainable future rests on our shoulders. Together, we can and must rise to the occasion,” the NGF chairman declared.
