Veteran journalist and popular columnist, Peter Enahoro, popularly called ‘Peter Pen’ is dead.
Enahoro died at the age of 88 years in London, where he has largely lived since 1966.
Enahoro was a book publisher, author and Editor-in-chief of the Daily Times.
Multiple sources to include renowned publisher, Mr Gbenro Adegbola and Nigeria’s foremost female journalist, Ms Bunmi Sofola confirmed Enahoro’s demise.
Sofola wrote, “Regret to announce the passing on of our iconic journalist Peter Enahoro “Peter Pan” today in London at the age of 88. RIP.”
Adegbola wrote, “Just heard of the death of the respected newspaper journalist and publisher, Peter Enahoro aka Peter Pan, in London where he has lived (on and off) since 1966. He was 88.”
Late Enahoro joined the Daily Times straight from school in the mid 1950s becoming a journalist like his older brother, the politician Chief Anthony Enahoro, who first made a name as a journalist.
He then soon rose to become Editor and by the age of 30 in 1965, was already the Editor-in-Chief.
While in the United Kingdom, he contributed writeups to various media outlets, where he shared insights into some of those issues that affect Nigerians.
He was once described in media historian Frank Barton’s Africa book, as Africa’s best journalist using the English language.
He briefly came back home to Nigeria in 1979/1980, but soon left again, only visiting on and off.
He also came back at a time in the late 1990s to act as sole administrator of the Daily Times for two years.
Enahoro’s classic bestselling satire, ‘How To Be A Nigerian,” published in 1966 has been reissued several times.
His most important book, however, is his memoirs-autobiography; titled, “Then Spoke the Thunder.”
In its tribute to Enahoro, the Booksellers, via @BooksellerNG, mourned thus: “Iconic Nigerian Journalist, Author, Publisher & Businessman, Peter Enahoro passed on at 88. He was a sweet man with an elegant & thunderous pen. He wrote these classics : How To Be A Nigerian and his memoirs, Then Spoke The Thunder. “
