THE University of Ibadan (UI) has inducted 14 new environmental health officers into the profession with the charge that they prioritize the public health of Nigerians.
The UI’s vice chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, speaking at the induction of 14 environmental health officers, said environmental health science is a profession of vital importance to public health and charged them as ambassadors to excel in the profession.
Adebowale, who was represented by Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Science at the College of Medicine of the University, Professor Oyeronke Odunola, said their induction into the environmental health profession was not just an academic milestone but the birth of a legacy, being pioneers of the course of study at the University.
Registrar of the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON), Dr Yakubu Mohammed, stated that the oath and signing of the ethics of the profession should serve as the basis and guide for their practice, attitude, and behaviour of conduct in the profession.
Dr Mohammed, who was represented by Mrs Lawal Abudulai, the Director of Administration and Licensing at the council, encouraged them to always impact positively on the cleanliness and safety of our environment.
“This will make you not only a professional protector of the environment but also a role model of the profession in our communities. The health of one man is the health of all,” he said.
EHCON SouthWest Zonal Director, Mrs Florence Daramola, who administered the code of professional ethics on the inductees, stated that they were expected to adhere to the prescribed dress code while on duty, adhere to the highest standards of personal ethics, give appropriate compliments, demonstrate due regard and show respect to senior members of the profession.
Acting Head of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Dr Temitope Laniyan, said the inductees, as they step into the professional world, should be ambassadors of integrity, scientific excellence and service.
“The future of environmental health in Nigeria and beyond rests on your shoulders, and I have no doubt that you will lead with knowledge, ethics and innovation. Let this maiden induction remind us all that great things begin with bold first steps. Today, we celebrate a beginning, and we look ahead with hope and pride,” she added.

The President of Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association (ICOMAA) Worldwide, Professor Samuel Omokhodion, and Former Chief Environmental Officer at the Ministry of Environment of Lagos State urged them to contribute to the development of their alma mata, continue to learn and support the health of the environment.
