Last time we began talking about the poser of reading books. Life is dynamic – things are changing fast and knowledge is being added to life to at an alarming rate. If care is not taken one will be left behind and swept off one’s feet by the new things that are happening. We must be alert and open minded to receiving information. To stay relevant we need to power our mind with right information and we cannot overemphasize the importance of reading books in our bid to have an equipped mind. Reading is a critical tool to help us make our lives count.
As long as we are alive we must see reading as a necessary thing to do but this will only happen if we know the value and importance of reading.
Knowledge is changing at a very high rate and one way to keep up is through reading. Reading relevant books will keep us up- to- date by giving us access to knowledge. Knowledge is power so we must acquire knowledge.
Secondly reading will give us access to insights, answers and solutions. Reading opens us up to tap into the insights that the author has discovered and documented in a book.
“A capacity, and taste, for reading gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others.” Abraham Lincoln
Virtually every problem has an answer in a book.
“Employ your time in improving yourself by other men’s writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for.” – Socrates
The third benefit of reading is that reading stimulates us mentally. When we become mentally lazy we rob ourselves the power of creative thinking and hinder our problem solving potential.
“Studies have shown that staying mentally stimulated can slow the progress of (or possibly even prevent) Alzheimer’s and Dementia, since keeping your brain active and engaged prevents it from losing power.
Just like any other muscle in the body, the brain requires exercise to keep it strong and healthy, so the phrase “use it or lose it” is particularly apt when it comes to your mind. Doing puzzles and playing games such as chess have also been found to be helpful with cognitive stimulation.” Catherine Winter
Reading exposes us to new ideas, concepts and ways of doing things. It opens us to new vistas .
There is no way we can talk of anyone being an expert without the person having a vibrant relationship with books. Reading books aids our ability to think. Our thinking skills are developed and sharpened by reading. Reading aids and improves our memory and fuels our imaginative processes.
Our vocabulary and speaking abilities are enhanced by our reading. What we read puts contents in our minds and the contents of our mind is usually revealed in the quality of our speech.
