The Sokoto State Primary Healthcare Development Agency has commended The Challenge Initiative (TCI) for its steadfast support in promoting family planning and reproductive health across the state.
Speaking at a one-day roundtable discussion held on Monday at the Epidemiological Unit of the Specialist Hospital in Sokoto, the agency’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Larai Tambuwal—represented by Malam Dahiru Muhammad Kamaru—stressed the need for continuous assessment, overcoming challenges, and developing long-term strategies to improve reproductive health services.
“This gathering is an opportunity to reflect on our successes, address obstacles, and set a clear direction for the future,” Dr. Tambuwal stated. She called for greater collaboration and open dialogue, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to ensuring family planning remains a key public health priority through advocacy and strategic partnerships.
Dr. Bello Abubakar Kilgori, TCI’s State Manager, highlighted the critical role of advocacy in expanding access to family planning services. He emphasized the importance of public awareness, grassroots engagement, and policy interventions to eliminate barriers and ensure reproductive health services reach those most in need.
Traditional leaders also weighed in on the discussion, with Sani Umar Jabbi, District Head of Gagi, stressing the economic and social importance of family planning. He advised couples to make informed decisions based on their financial and personal circumstances, noting that economic realities are prompting more families to embrace family planning as a sustainable solution.
The meeting also addressed common cultural misconceptions surrounding family planning and explored strategies to improve service accessibility. Participants agreed that religious and community leaders play a vital role in shifting societal attitudes and fostering acceptance of reproductive health practices.
Closing the session, Dr. Tambuwal called for continued commitment from all stakeholders, stating, “By working together, we can build a healthier and more informed society where every individual has access to reproductive health services and the knowledge to make empowered choices.”
With strong backing from government agencies, traditional leaders, and advocacy groups, Sokoto State is taking bold steps toward strengthening its family planning initiatives, ensuring a more sustainable and prosperous future for families across the region.
