As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Samsung Heavy Industries Nigeria (SHIN) is partnering the Nigeria Institute of Welders (NIW) for participation in the Worldskills International Welding Olympics 2021.
The event will hold in Shanghai, China, next year.
The latest initiative is part of SHIN’s efforts aimed at contributing to the development of the welding industry, and also empowering Nigerian youths with acquisition of high-demand skills for rapid development of the country.
According to a statement issued by NIW and made available to the Nigerian Tribune, entrants for the Wordskills Olympics would be carefully selected through a National Welding Contest, the first ever in Nigeria.
According to the statement, SHIN would also make additional contribution to the event by donations to the entrants and the competition itself.
It added that the memorandum of agreement between SHIN and NIW would be signed at the end of the month.
The statement reads: “Active participation in such event will also go a long way in redirecting focus on the country, and allowing Nigeria to compete with other countries of the world.
“Given the current uncertainties regarding holding of events, if the National Welding Contest does not take place in November as planned, SHIN will also provide the facility for the contest free of charge.”
The statement also disclosed that 36 promising participants will be selected from tertiary institutions in Nigeria for the 2021 National Welding Competition.
It added that winners would receive the NIW Certificate of participation, the National Skills Qualification Certification and the International Welder Diploma Certification.
The Managing Director of SHIN, Jejin Jeon, said, “This will afford the winners an opportunity to enter the Worldskills Olympics in 2021.
SHIN is also working closely with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to explore the possibility of holding an exclusive hands-on welding training for Nigerians , particularly the low income and vulnerable Nigerians.
“SHIN believes in the immense potential of the Nigerian youths, and wants to grow together with the country.”
It will be recalled that the skills transfer training school of SHIN has greatly impacted on the welding sector of Nigeria, while Samsung has also trained many Nigerians in MIG-Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Laser Beam Welding (LBW), among others.
