The rampaging militias in Plateau State struck again on Sunday, killing six people, burning several houses, and rustling over 100 cows in the Barakin-Ladi local government area of the state, even as the authority of Mangu Council has declared a curfew in the troubled parts of the area.
The Nigerian Tribune learned that gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias who had occupied the rock of Ropp attacked the villages of Kai, Rapyam, Nding Sesut, and Lohalla of Fan District of Barakin-Ladi local government area of the state on Sunday.
A resident of Fan who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune on condition of anonymity said the simultaneous attacks on the villages were carried out at about 5:30 a.m., adding that several houses were burned and six people were killed.
He further stated that the casualties would have been high but for the prompt counterattack by hunters and vigilantes who squared it up with the invaders who came in large numbers.
He said, ” To our utter dismay, there were no proactive measures taken to avert the obviously pending aggression until four of our villages were attacked and houses touched by fire before security agents came in.
“Over one hundred of our cows were rustled. We tried to intercept but were resisted by security agents who, instead of stopping the rustlers, displayed the contrary with gunfire that aided the escape of the Fulani with the said cows.”
Also, the authority of the Mangu local government area of the state has declared a curfew in the area following a threat to peace in some parts of the council.
There was pandemonium in the local government on Sunday when some gunmen armed with sophisticated weapons attempted to launch attacks in some of the communities but were repelled by hunters and youths of the council.
The situation forced the Management Transition Chairman of the Council, Hon. Markus Artu, to declare a 24-hour curfew.
Attempts to reach the spokesman of Plateau Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, proved abortive as he could not be reached on his phone.
