NOT many people know the importance of museums in the society.
What many know is that a museum is where ‘old’ items are kept. Many of these people also can’t fathom the importance of such ‘old’ items.
Now, to understand the history of a race, one has to look at the past, and to achieve this is to go through the museum.
The museum keeps relics of the past of a particular group of people and what they were doing or using during the period.
Museums collect and preserve objects and materials of religious, cultural and historical value.
These museums help to preserve and promote a people’s cultural heritage. It is also a storehouse of old artefacts, sculptures, objects, history etc.
As a result, museums have evolved into tool for socio-cultural integration.
Museums in Nigeria use the artefacts under their care to engage with visitors from across the world to improve socio-cultural understanding and provide more information and reflections about its people.
It must be noted that if not for museums, the collection and housing of old artifacts, objects, sculptures, arts will not be possible.
These historical objects may have been a thing of the past and will not be made available for studying or for reference purposes without the museum.
Meanwhile, while no museum can claim to provide a complete picture, the lessons learnt from past events, wonders and tragedies are priceless. This is especially true in times of turmoil.
It is, therefore, important that more efforts must be made to sensitise the public on the benefits of visiting museums. While it may also be entertaining in nature, the insights and knowledge will definitely last a lifetime.
