Okowa inaugurates 18th sickle cell clinic, as Warri chair assures accessibility to facility

Wife of Delta State governor, Dame Edith Okowa, on Friday inaugurated her 18th Sickle Cell Clinic at Central Hospital, Warri, just as Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Dr Michael Tidi, assured of judicious use and easy access to the facility by everybody.

The project was the 18th in the state courtesy of the ingenuity of 05 Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organization founded by Mrs Okowa.

Dame Okowa, who averred that Sickle Cell Anaemia was not a death sentence, said people with Sickle Cell disorder could get to their career heights with good management.

Justifying that the disorder was not a fatal one, the governor’s wife hinted that a High Court Judge in Delta State is a survivor of Sickle Cell disorder, adding that the aim of 05 Initiative is to have a society free of sickle cell disorder.

She stressed the need for people to know their genotype and urged faith-based organizations to carry out advocacy on the need for their faithful to know their genotype.

Dame Okowa further disclosed that “Our aim is to ensure that all public hospitals in the state, have a sickle cell clinic, before May 29, 2023.

“Central Hospital, Warri, now has a screening facility for sickle cell patients. I want to thank Dr Tidi and the Secretary to Warri South Local Government (Mr Joseph Oribioye) for ensuring the project was completed in record time.”

Governor Okowa’s hearthrob also commended the member representing Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Thomas Ereyitomi, Chief Joseph Otumara and others, who contributed toward the completion of the sickle cell clinic.

Chairman of Warri South, Dr Tidi, who spoke to newsmen after the health facility was inaugurated, stated that the governor’s wife deserved all the commendation.

He described the sickle cell clinic as a bold step that has placed Delta State on the world map, just as he expressed optimism that the clinic, which is the 18th to be inaugurated in the state by 05 Initiative, would be put to good use and the sickle cell warriors will be able to find succour at the centre.

On his part, the Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mordi Ononye, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Ejiro Ogheneagah, expressed delight at the Sickle Cell Clinics established in the state by the 05 Initiative.

Highlights of the inauguration were health talk by medics on the management of sickle cell, diet advisory for sufferers and strict adherence to prescribed drugs. taking their routine drugs.
