Against calls for the scrap of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr Sunday Dare, at the weekend stressed that the scheme has come to stay.
This was even as the scheme launched its first movie, “A Call To Service.”
In his address at the movie premiere in Abuja, the Minister stated that the Scheme is more relevant than it has ever been.
He further stated that the movie will help speed up plans to ensure that the NYSC Trust Fund is eventually granted.
“Within the first quarter of next year when we have done all that is necessary, I will be able to present a memo in council seeking for the establishment of the fund,” he said.
Earlier, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, said the movie was part of the innovative approaches of the present management to engendering a greater appreciation of the relevance of the Scheme.
“It is an advocacy and sensitisation tool that is also expected to influence the greater commitment of stakeholders to their roles and responsibilities as spelt out in the NYSC Act Cap N84 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and the NYSC Bye-Laws.
“In particular, it will encourage locally and foreign-trained Nigerian graduates that are eligible for National Service to immediately make themselves available for the service upon graduation as well as avoid infractions such as absenteeism, abscondment, and Certificate forgery,” the DG stated.
Also, he informed that most of the casts in the movie were serving corps members at the time of its production.
