GRADE A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State has heard the testimony of a man, Olabajo, who filed a divorce suit against his wife, Oluranti, on the grounds that she was diabolic, irresponsible, quarrelsome, violent and fond of neglecting him and their children.
Olabajo stated that Oluranti, shortly after she started living with him, began to worship a deity, Osun, and brought into their home a fetish pot against his wish, which she kept in a corner of their room.
According to him, she poured libation on this pot day and night and also engaged in other diabolic practices.
The plaintiff explained that they were always sent packing by their landlords because the defendant never ceased to fight him and their neighbours.
Olabajo stated that Oluranti went too far when she threatened to beat their landlady to a pulp.
The plaintiff further complained of neglect, stating that the defendant constantly abandoned her duties in the home, while she was in the habit of returning home late from work, thus making their children starve.
Olabajo said that Oluranti had succeeded in frustrating him and injuring his ego, and as such, he was no longer interested in going further with their relationship.
Oluranti failed to make an appearance in court despite being served court summonses.
Olubajo, while giving his evidence, said, “My wife has succeeded in making life unbearable for me. She refused that I enjoy our marriage and ended up frustrating me.
“If I knew that my Oluranti is diabolic, I would not have gone into wedlock with her.
“My wife brought in a pot a few weeks after she moved in with me and announced that she is an Osun worshipper.
“She carries out some rituals which frighten me and make our home uncomfortable for me to live in.
“I ordered her to take the pot out, but she remained adamant.
“My wife is stubborn and quarrelsome, which is one major reason our marriage has failed to work.
“Oluranti is never submissive. She loves to argue and have her way.
“She picks fault in all that I say and do and turn every issue into a fight.
“She has worn me out with her constant fight.
“My wife is violent and fights like someone possessed when she is angry.
“She fights me or anybody at all with sticks and broken bottles.
“Our home is lacks peace and is always unwelcoming because she is a difficult person to live with.
“We always move from one house to another because our landlords always send us packing.
“Oluranti and our neighbours do not see eye to eye. She fights with them on regular basis.
“The last time we were thrown out, she threatened to beat our landlady blue black.
“My wife neglects me and our children and carries out none of her responsibilities in the home.
“Oluranti leaves home early, not bothering about our children’s welfare, and would return late.
“Our children look malnourished and unkempt because she constantly starves them.
“My lord, our home is obviously not a happy family.
“Oluranti has worn me out with her hostile behaviour, and I cannot bear with her any longer.
“I pray this honourable court to end our relationship so that I can pick up the pieces of my life.”
The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo, adjourned the case and ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served the defendant.
