I am a retired civil servant in my late 60s. I started having diminished hearing ability since last year. I will appreciate it if you can kindly let me know what to do about it.

One of the most common ear problems affecting the elderly and in some cases, the young is hearing loss. There are three main types of hearing loss; conductive, sensor neural, and mixed (both conductive and sensor neural). Conductive hearing loss occurs when there is a problem conducting sound waves; resulting from issues with an eardrum, ear canal and/or the three bones connected to the eardrum. Often there is a build-up of material in the ear, such as fluid or ear wax, which must be eliminated. Sensor neural hearing loss on the other hand is related to problems with the inner ear. This type of loss involves damage to the nerves from exposure to loud noise (noise-induced hearing loss), or it may be related to aging. This type of hearing loss is most often associated with hearing aids. Issues of hearing loss are best attended to by an Ear Nose and Throat doctor who can be accessed at any private, specialist or teaching hospital nearest to you.
