The Ministry of Mines and Steel Development in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has inaugurated the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the ministry.
It was jointly inaugurated by the Permanent Secretary, Dr (Mrs.) Oluwatoyin Akinlade, and the ICPC chairman, Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
While delivering her speech, the permanent secretary, who congratulated the members, therefore, urged them to rededicate themselves and demonstrate exemplariness by living above board at all times. Her message was delivered by the Director of Artisanal Small Scale Mining (ASM), Engineer Patrick Ojeka at the event.
In a statement signed by Tony Ekpo on behalf of the Head of Press and Public Relations Unit of the ministry, Mrs Etore Thomas, Dr Akinlade said the occasion symbolized the collective resolve in the ministry to sustain and nurture the service-wide institutional framework designed for preventing corruption and promotion of transparency and accountability.
“What we are celebrating in this ministry today is the dawn of a new era, having successfully midwife a brand new ACTU team following the expiration of the three-year tenure of the outgoing team in March 2021.” She stated.
The permanent secretary said the development was particularly significant to the ministry, given the current high expectations of the country from its mines and steel sector as a major pillar and driver of the economic diversification agenda.
In his speech, the ICPC chairman, Professor Owasanoye, explained that the ministry was charged with the mandate of supervising the growth and development of the national minerals for effective utilisation and revenue generation for national growth.
He, therefore, urged the staff to understand their responsibility and live above board in order to propel the ministry to greater heights
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the acting Director, Special Duties, Yisau Adepoju, described it as an important occasion because the war against corruption constitutes one of the three cardinal pillars of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
He said the occasion practically demonstrated the ministry’s identification with the virtues of transparency, accountability and judicious application of public resources, which is necessary for success in the conduct of the government businesses.
The head of the team, Mr Christopher Warije, while speaking on behalf of others, said he was humbled by the mandate given to his colleagues and him to fly the flag of the fight against corruption in the ministry.
