The incident, which happened adjacent Junior Secondary School (JSS), Garki at Area Ten in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abuja, created a lot of gridlock and other artificial hindrances within the area, as students and other passers-by started using their mobile telephones to snap and video him.
Eyewitnesses told Tribune Online that the taxi driver, who was heading towards UTC area (Computer Village), was abruptly stopped, while one of the VIOs entered his vehicle to check the particulars.
Having realised his insubordination to the traffic rules, witnesses said the taxi driver then swerved the vehicle to block the oncoming vehicles, jumped out of the car and started pulling off his clothes.
According to one of the witnesses, “we initially thought this man was joking when he jumped out of his car after he blocked the road with the car. I have never seen something like this before in my life. He firstly unbuttoned his shirt and put it on the car, and gradually removing the rest till he pulled off his ‘boxer’ and pant. He then started appealing to passers-by to come to his aid.
“By this period, students of JSS Garki have closed for today (yesterday) and returning to their respective homes, so it was so pathetic as some of them who also have mobile telephones started snapping and recording him, and this man did not even bother, as he continued calling for help from passers-by”, he explained.
It was further gathered that when the gridlock was too much, the VIOs had to appeal to him to dress up and go. “He then picked up all his clothes from the vehicle, wore only the ‘boxer’ and sped off.
When Tribune Online approached one of the officers, who did not want his name in print said: “yes, it was true! We came from Area One Division and since I started this profession, I have never come across this drama in my life.”
