Following the non-payment of local government staff salaries for seven months in Taraba State by the Governor Darius Ishaku led administration, those affected have expressed fear of an impending hunger crisis in the state.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that local government staff received their last payment in November last year.
A second class chief in the central zone of the state who did not want his name mentioned told Nigerian Tribune on Sunday Jalingo that “this is cropping season, 70 per cent of farmers in Taraba are local government staff whom many small scale farmers depend on to burst their farming activities at every end of the month.Â
“Our modern way of farming is purely money and the local government staff who are major farmers in Taraba have not received a salary for seven months now. I am afraid that the state is going to be in a hunger crisis by next year due to this development.
“The possibility of bumper harvest is already 80 per cent lost.Â
Meanwhile, the SSA to Governor Darius Ishaku on Media and Publicity, Bala Dan Abu confirmed the seven months non-payment of the salaries of local government staff in the state.
Dan Abu said, “There are challenges all over the country and many states are not paying salaries. Governor Ishaku is even trying.
“The issue of local government staff is an exceptional issue. Some of the council chairmen have failed to manage the local government resources very well. I’m not saying the local government chairmen have diverted money, but many of them have been applying for so many things which are affecting the local governments.”
Nigerian Tribune recalls that some time in 2020 and 2021, some institutional bodies in the state like ASUU, NUT and the local government staff association took their non-payment problem to God where three days muti-religional prayers were held. Â
