The Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, Professor Salisu Ogbo, has charged the new executives of the Students Union on transparency and accountability.

He gave this charge while inaugurating the new Student Union Government (SUG) and the National Association of Kogi State Students (NAKOSS) of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, for the 2024/2025 academic session.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held for the SUG and NAKOSS on Monday, November 4, 2024, at the 200 Twin Lecture Theatre of the Polytechnic’s main campus, Professor Ogbo encouraged the new executives to uphold the values of their campaigns as true student unionists focused on addressing students’ welfare.

Professor Ogbo, who congratulated the new leadership of both SUG and NAKOSS, urged them to set an example worthy of emulation and to lead in ways that would ensure a positive legacy.

He advised the new student leaders against divisive approaches, emphasising that good governance transcends religion and tribe.

He also commended the electoral committee for conducting free, fair, and transparent elections and appreciated the candidates who conceded defeat for their spirit of sportsmanship. He advised the winners to exemplify the qualities of good leaders by being inclusive.

Professor Ogbo further cautioned the newly inaugurated executives of both SUG and NAKOSS against being influenced by mischief-makers.

Professor Ogbo, however, assured the executives that his administration would continue to prioritise the welfare and well-being of students.

Earlier, in his remarks, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Dr. Engr. Adamu Mohammed Alaji commended the students for their orderly conduct and appreciated the Polytechnic management and members of his committee for their support throughout the election process.

In their separate remarks, the Dean of Student Services, Dr. John Adavuruku Aliyu; the Chief Security Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr Emmanuel Attah Onuh; and the Director of Legal Services, Barrister Williams Ameh, advised the new executives to use their positions to promote peaceful coexistence on campus. They encouraged them to build on the successes of their predecessors, uphold the law, and serve as good ambassadors for the institution.

In her acceptance speech, the new SUG President, Comrade Enimokanyi Oluwadamilola Janet, expressed gratitude to her co-contestants for their sportsmanship and pledged to be magnanimous in victory. She assured the students that the SUG under her leadership would elevate student unionism and focus more on student welfare while calling for the support of all students.

Similarly, the newly inaugurated NAKOSS President, Abubakar Isah Sheriff, promised that his tenure would ensure proper representation for Kogi State indigenes at Kogi State Polytechnic.

Highlights of the inauguration included the administration of the oath of office to the new executives of both the SUG and NAKOSS, as well as the issuance of certificates of return.
