A former member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Honourable Segun Erinle has lamented the increasing cases of killings, kidnappings and other heinous crimes in the state, calling on the governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi and other stakeholders to work together towards addressing the menace.
The former lawmaker who spoke against the backdrop of last weekend’s attack on some travelers noted that government should equip the Amotekun corps with sophisticated weapons for them to adequately combat the bandits terrorising the state.
Erinle is a brother in-law to Sesan Orisan, who came to the area from Lagos for a burial ceremony but was killed by kidnappers along Ewu-Ekiti-Ayetoro-Ekiti road when returning to his hotel after the event.
The gunmen later kidnapped his wife, and daughter who were in the vehicle with the man and were released on Tuesday night after spending four nights in the kidnappers’ den and payment of about N2 million ransom.
He pleaded with governor Fayemi and his counterpart in Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to assist the daughter of the deceased, Feyi Orisan in fulfilling her educational pursuit.
According to him, the girl a master’s degree student whose father was killed in her presence by gunmen who also kidnapped her needed help to continue her studies in the university.
He said, “There must be synergy between the Chairmen of the adjoining Moba, Ido/Osi and Ilejemeje local government areas, traditional rulers, police and others to find a lasting solutions to the problem.”
“What happened last week is a disgrace to the State hence all hands must be on deck to put a lasting solution to the problem.
“The kidnappers use same route to carry out the kidnapping and I believe it should be easier to apprehend them.”
While commending the state government for its initiative to acquire high-tech drones for the Amotekun corps, Erinle urged residents of the state to support the security agents with timely and accurate information.
“I appeal to all Ekiti people in diaspora not to be afraid of coming to the state as Ekiti remains their Jerusalem but instead to support in efforts to make Ekiti a safe haven for all,” he added.
