I experienced pains in the left side of my chest and was told it is heart burn. Somebody recommended GASCOL which relieved me. Kindly let me know the effect of heartburn in future because I am now 58 years plus.

Heartburn is actually caused by acid refluxing back into the oesophagus (food pipe) from the stomach. Risk factors include those that increase the production of acid in the stomach, as well as structural problems that allow acid reflux into the oesophagus. That is why you had a good relief when you took GASCOL which is an antacid. If well treated with antacids, a correction of too much acid in the stomach and any structural defect that allows an acid reflux, heartburn can be well controlled and ultimately healed. However, if left uncontrolled, it could get worse and lead to ulcer among other problems.
