The Zamfara State government has called on parents and guardians to monitor their children particularly girls on how they are using phones in this digital world in the state.
Speaking, on Tuesday, during the occasion to mark the 2021 International Day of Girls Child held at the Zamfara State ministry of women and Children, Gusau the commissioner for Women affairs Hajiya Zainab Lawal Gummi said girls were subjected to so many crises.
The two-day that marked ceremony of girl child in Zamfara State was organized by the Ministry for Women and Children Affairs in collaboration with Save the Children international in the state.
She stressed that girls have experienced numerous forms of crises such as gender-based violence, rape, physical injuries, hard labour, forced marriage, neglect and exploitation.
The commissioner who was represented by the Director in the ministry Hajiya Fatima Mohammed disclosed that parents were advised to monitor their children on the use of phones in this era of digital technology.
“It is indeed timely and had informed our resolve to appeal to all parents and guardians to be absolutely supervising and monitoring how our girls utilize their phones in order to guide them to benefit positively from the digital generation technology as well as boys.”
She said a lot has happened and still happening during the Coronavirus pandemic that brought a step back to the activities in the state.
“We can still make use of many things to bridge the gaps missing, like training, so take the precautionary measures of this COVID-19 where ever you are.”
In his remarks, the field Manager of Save the Children Zamfara State, Mr Murtala Bello, said people should think beyond the celebration of girl children day.
He called on the people to think of ways and measures that would better the lives of every child in society.
According to him, rape is at a high rate now, let the authorities think of what to do now, review the action plan.
He disclosed that Save the Children International has established centres at Talata Mafara and Kaura Namoda that would monitor early marriages as part of measures to reduce the risk of child marriage in the state.
Also, the speaker Zamfara State Children parliament Saadatu Mohammed lamented that they are worried about girl Almajiris in the state.
The children parliament disclosed that girl-child Almajiri is becoming rampant in our communities, urged relevant authorities to take more measures and tackle the trend in the state.
