The authorities of the Federal University of Technology Minna, Niger State, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Global Network for Cybersolution Limited to establish an International Centre for Emerging Technology (ICET) to incubate projects.
Speaking before signing the MoU between the FUT, Minna and GNC Limited last week, the vice chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Bala, said the establishment of the centre would allow for high quality research and publications, adding that it was part of the university’s plans to boost revenue generation through professional development and research.
According to him, “the centre will cover the fast-paced digital technology field, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (AIR), Virtual Realty (VR) Blockchain Technology (BCT), Big Data Analytics (BDA), Cyberspace Security and Governance.”
The centre, according to the VC, is the first in Nigeria, and that it will give students and staff the opportunity to address contemporary ideas.
Earlier in his remarks at the occasion, the president and co-founder of GNC, Ambassador Olusegun Olugbile, said the establishment of the centre would help to solve national and global developmental problems.
“It will serve as an engine of innovation in emerging technology for development on cybersecurity intervention, digital cooperation, cybercrime laws implementation, internet governance strategy, and emerging technology for development in Africa,” he said.
Ambassador Olugbile added that the centre would focus mainly on cybercrime counter-measures, cybersecurity, internet governance, child online protection, law enforcement assisted programmes, emerging technology for sustainable development (IG4SD), and digital economic strategy.
