The Anambra State coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs Yetunde Baberinnwa, on Thursday, disclosed that the scheme lost five corps members who were serving in the state recently.
Baberinnwa made the disclosure during the passing out parade of corps members of the 2021 Batch ‘A’ (Stream 1) Service Year.
According to her, three of the corps members died during childbirth, one died from natural causes while another died in a road accident.
She named those who died as Onoh Bless An/21A/2153, Owoh Mercy An/21A/3270, Mbam Timothy An/21A/1653, Ozor Anthony An/21A/2098 and Tabele Mercy An/21A/3378.
She urged corps members to remain resilient even in the face of uncertainty ahead of the 2023 general elections.
“I want to commend their diligence and their patriotic commitment in the conduct of the Anambra State 2021 governorship election. The batch, despite the initial impression that the election was going to be bloody, remained resolute in their oath of working towards national unity and development. I am proud of them for their commitment and resilience in doing the right things during the election,” she said.
The coordinator, however, said that all challenges resulting from the payment of allowances were being promptly resolved.

“I recall your first moments here and how you were unsure of what to make out of the service year. How it seemed like an unattainable feat at the time. Today, as we count down to your last few minutes as corps members, I see in the countenance on your faces and the joyful atmosphere here, a sense of fulfillment at being able to conclude this important phase of your lives. Once more, accept our congratulations,” she added.
She admonished them to realise that their certificate of national service was not a guarantee that jobs will be running into their waiting arms, urging them to bring to bear all the lessons learnt during the service year, especially the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) training as a reliable means to self-actualisation.
“Eschew fraudulent acts, get-rich-quick schemes and other forms of corruption,” she warned.
She also announced that 12 corps members will repeat their service year owing to their absence during the orientation programme.
