Ethics encompasses a wide range of principles that guide human behavior, and while some rules may vary across cultures and contexts, certain fundamental principles are commonly understood and respected.

  • Never eat the last piece of something you didn’t buy
  • Never make the first offer in a negotiation
  • If you are not invited, don’t ask to go
  • Dress well no matter what the occasion

Here are 10 unspoken rules that are often considered important in ethical conduct:

Never shake a hand sitting down

It’s polite to stand when greeting someone with a handshake. When you stand to shake someone’s hand, it demonstrates respect and acknowledgment of the other person

Respect for Others

Treat others with dignity, respect, and fairness, regardless of their background, beliefs, or status. This includes being courteous, empathetic, and considerate in your interactions.

Honesty and Integrity

Be truthful in your words and actions, and uphold high moral principles even when no one is watching.

Confidentiality

Respect the privacy and confidentiality of others, particularly when entrusted with sensitive information. Avoid sharing confidential or private information without proper authorization.

Responsibility and Accountability

Take responsibility for your actions and their consequences. Acknowledge mistakes, learn from them, and strive to make amends when necessary.

Never insult the cooking when you are the guest

When invited to someone’s home for a meal, it’s generally considered impolite and disrespectful to criticize or insult the food that has been prepared for you.

Never eat the last piece of something you didn’t buy

It’s polite to leave the last piece of an item not bought by you for the person who purchased it, it’s about showing consideration and sharing.

Never make the first offer in a negotiation

In negotiations, letting the other person make the first offer is often better. This way, you can learn more about their position and use that information to your advantage. If you make the first offer, you might set the bar too high or too low. But if they make the first move, you can adjust your strategy accordingly to get a better deal

If you are not invited, don’t ask to go

If you haven’t been invited to an event or gathering, it’s generally considered impolite to ask if you can attend.

Dress well no matter what the occasion

The popular saying never be caught unfresh plays in here; no matter the occasion or outing, always dress well

These unspoken rules guide ethical behavior in various personal, professional, and social contexts. While they may not always be explicitly stated, they form the foundation of a moral and ethical framework that promotes mutual respect, integrity, and justice in human interactions.
