A suspected thief met his death on Wednesday while allegedly vandalising an electricity cable at Shere community of Jos East local government area of Plateau State.
Tribune Online learnt that the unidentified thief along with three others had sneaked into the community at about 3:00 am and climbed a pole close to the electrical transformer while the two others were at the basement of the ladder.
It was gathered that the man was electrocuted in the act while the two others immediately took to their heels when they noticed that the one on the high tension pole has been electrocuted. The incident caused a heavy spark of electrical cable which attracted the attention of those living in the vicinity.
The Deputy Chairman, Jos East local government, Hon. Ishaku Ajang who arrived at the scene at about 7:45 am described the incident as economic sabotage and wondered why such an able young man will engage in such a dangerous criminal act.
He implored the youths in the area to engage in productive ventures that would make them be responsible citizens of Nigeria and desist from any act of sabotage that would affect the economy of the country.
“It is the responsibility of all to protect government properties including electricity cable and transformers. We shall continue to sensitize our youths in this regard, the act of vandalism is a criminal act which should not be tolerated” he said.
Also, the Engineer in charge of 33 Kv Toro Feeder Mallam Sha’aban Maikudi urged the youths to avoid tampering with the high tension cables and transformers around the area and warned that any physical encounter.
