Relief may soon come for students of the Edo state-owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, which was closed two weeks ago, as the university’s Senate announced that it would soon meet to consider the resumption of academic activities.
The Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin, made this announcement in Benin on Tuesday during a press conference at the Edo State secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), discussing the ongoing situation at the University.
Adagbonyin clarified that the alleged increase in school fees, which led to student protests and subsequently the closure of the institution, was false. He emphasised that the tuition fees for returning students at AAU remained the same, with only freshmen experiencing a fee increase.
“There is no increment in tuition fees for returning students of AAU,” the Vice Chancellor stressed. He pointed out that students were given the opportunity to pay their school fees in two instalments to reduce the financial burden.
Regarding the closure of the school, Adagbonyin explained that the university management took action as the students’ protest turned violent, with some students attacking fellow students and lecturers, resulting in injuries on campus. The students also disrupted a commendation service for a late Professor.
Professor Adagbonyin further stated that due to these infractions, the management dissolved the Student Union Government leadership and appointed a Caretaker Committee. He emphasised that erring students would be held accountable for their actions.
He described the political dimension the protest at AAU has taken as “a deeply entrenched conspiracy” and urged those who have turned the university into a war zone to give peace a chance. He emphasised that misinformation was widespread and urged the public to seek accurate information from the university’s website and avoid falsehoods.
The Vice-Chancellor also announced that 90 Medical Doctors who recently graduated from the university would soon be inducted. He debunked media reports that the institution was offering fake degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, stating that the university had already paid the prescribed fees to the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) for the re-accreditation of the courses whose accreditation recently lapsed.
