In another tranche of payment, a total of 456 retirees of the Oyo state government, on Monday, began to receive cheques containing various gratuities that summed up to N1.380 billion.
Monday’s beneficiaries were retired local government staff, retired primary school teachers and next of kin of deceased staff across the 33 local government areas of the state.
At the presentation of cheques at the state Secretariat, Ibadan, Chairman, Local Government Staff Pension Board, Prince Adebayo Adeyemi urged the beneficiaries not to squander the sums of money they are getting.
He also asserted the continued commitment of the Governor Seyi Makinde-led government to clear the backlog of various salaries owed our pensioners over the years.
In his words of admonition, Special Adviser to Makinde on Labour Matters, Mr Bayo Titilola-Sodo warned the beneficiaries against using the lump sum of money got to invest in businesses that they know little about.
Rather than investing in new businesses in their old age, he urged the beneficiaries to rather expend their finances on feeding well and living a healthy life.
Deputy Auditor-General for the Local Government, Mr Samuel Awobode especially urged the beneficiaries to be wary of falling into the hands of scammers who bandy around various business ideas to dupe unsuspecting persons.
Awobode explained that the Makinde administration was now paying pensions and gratuities because it yielded advice to earmark a certain amount of money monthly.
Giving various instances, Secretary, Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo state, Mr Segun Abatan, warned the beneficiaries against committing funds into ventures there are not grounded in its management.
Abatan also lauded the Makinde administration for releasing over a N7.2billion to clear the backlog of pensions and gratuities met by the current administration.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Adedeji Sunday said the continuous payment of pensions and gratuities by the current administration demonstrated the state governor as a kind and committed person.
