THE parliamentary system of governance introduced by the Osun State governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola at the local government level has been described by a gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Dr Saka Abiodun Layonu as a laudable democratic paradigm, worthy of emulation.
He made this known in Ede, over the weekend while playing host to councillors on the platform of APC from Ede North and South local government areas of the state.
Layonu, who underscored the benefits of a parliamentary system of government to the country said the system would relief Nigeria from the unnecessary financial burden, which he identified as one of the challenges in a presidential system of government.
According to him, “parliamentary system of government is less expensive and far better than that of the presidential system of government that we are practising in Nigeria and Governor Rauf Aregbesola deserves commendation for taking a bold step in the quest for a new democratic alternative to the present presidential system. He had set a dynamic pace for other governors to follow”.
While observing that the landslide victory of the party in the just concluded local government election in Osun was an indication that the APC was still popular amongst the electorate, Layonu attributed the strength of the party in the state to improved infrastructural facilities and renewed security architecture, coupled with a dynamic educational policy of Aregbesola’s administration.
He stated, “we have a cause to celebrate as a party, despite all odds, the experience of the people of Osun in the last seven years has been awesome, the state had witnessed the accelerated transformation in both infrastructure and human capital. Look at the brilliant initiative of a viable democratic alternative at the grassroots, the parliamentary system of government in our local governments, which will automatically eradicate autocracy and waste”.
Layonu, however, charged the newly elected councillors to work tirelessly for the people they represent and fulfil the essence of local government administration by bringing government nearer to the people.
