You must compensate families of persons crushed to death by Customs vehicle, Masari tells CG

Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has told the Comptroller-General (CG) of Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Hameed Ali that Customs must compensate families of persons who were crushed to death by customs patrol vehicle in the state recently.

Gov Masari also expressed his displeasure at the incident when he received a Customs delegation sent by the CG to commiserate with the state government.

The delegation, led by the Zonal Coordinator Zone “B” of the Nigerian Customs Service, Uba Muhammad, was received by the governor on Monday in Katsina.

Speaking, Gov Masari told the delegation that the victims must be adequately compensated and culprits prosecuted.

However, he noted if that was not done, the state would have no other option than to take legal redress.

“Convey our message to your Comptroller General that our position is very clear that you must compensate those who lost their lives and those who sustained injuries, prosecute those who did it. Failure to do that, we will take the necessary legal action. We may not succeed, but we will test it,” he said.

Masari further said they were forced to receive the delegation in his office also told them that the Nigerian Customs Service was biased against Katsina people despite the massive contribution given by the indigenes of the state towards the development of the agency.

“I can’t understand why you are biased against Katsina people, especially under this present administration. The audacity of Customs here in Katsina. My own official vehicle was once arrested here by the Customs officers with the coat of arms and everything,” he said.

Also, he wondered that in the distance of about forty kilometres from Katsina to Jibiya, there were 28 checkpoints of the Customs, saying they were not actually checkpoints but toll gates.
