CHEVRON Nigeria Ltd (CNL) on Tuesday disclosed that it is currently working with emergency response contractors to safely and swiftly put out the Ojumole Well 1 fire in Western Niger Delta.
This is just as the oil giant hinted that it has also deployed accredited independent environmental consultants to monitor the environment around the impacted area.
General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs (PGPA), CNL, Mr Esimaje Brikinn, in a statement, said the delay in putting out the fire was not unconnected to the peculiar terrain of the well location that’s difficult to access.
He said there was the need to create an access road to the slot leading to the wellhead to enable heavy equipment and personnel to gain access to the well location to extinguish the fire.

Brikinn, however, explained that all oil spilt has been contained within CNL’s right of way and is being actively recovered.
He added that representatives of National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) are on the site of the fire observing the monitoring.
The PGPA boss, therefore, reassures members of the host communities in the area of CNL’s safe operational conduct, reliability and efficiency with utmost consideration to the protection of the people and the environment.
It will be recalled that a fire was observed at Ojumole Well 1, described as idle and plugged-well with no flow line connected to it, in the late evening of April 18, 2019, after which a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) determined a third-party interference as responsible for the incident.
