The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), has voiced concerns over the recent increase in electricity tariffs by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), which has significantly impacted the university’s budget.
In an email to staff and students, Professor Egbewole revealed that the university’s monthly electricity bill has surged from N70 million to N230 million, a situation he described as “unsustainable.”
The Vice Chancellor emphasized the urgent need to reassess current electricity usage practices. He urged both staff and students to adopt more responsible electricity consumption habits and support the administration’s cost-saving measures.
As a Professor of International Law and Jurisprudence, he mentioned that the administration is intensifying efforts to negotiate alternative power supply solutions, which are expected to yield positive results soon.
To this end, Professor Egbewole announced that all new buildings under construction in the Faculties of Agriculture, Arts, Environmental Science, Law, and Social Sciences will include provisions for alternative power sources in their design.
He added that strategies are being developed to ensure all Faculties and Units are equipped with reliable alternative power options.
The Vice Chancellor also highlighted the importance of protecting these new facilities from theft and vandalism, calling on the entire university community to safeguard these resources.
Professor Egbewole expressed his gratitude to the staff and students for their resilience and cooperation during recent disruptions in electricity and water supply. He praised their collective effort and sense of responsibility, which helped the university navigate these challenges.
“The past few days have clearly demonstrated the sterling qualities in us as staff and students of this great university. The administration remains ever grateful for this show of deep support for the university in the face of daunting challenges.”
The Vice Chancellor reassured the University community of the administration’s ongoing commitment to addressing the economic challenges affecting the university. He pledged continued efforts to provide a conducive learning and working environment despite the financial constraints.
