The vice chancellor of University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka, Professor Folasade Ogunsola has urged members of committees set up by the university to prepare adequately for the oncoming Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU), is to be hosted by the university in conjunction with the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.
She said the university is expecting the committees to surpass the success recorded by the university during the last Nigerian University Games (NUGA), which it hosted two years ago.
The VC gave the charge while inaugurating the 18 different committees for the sporting event.
Speaking to the committee members, she said: “While I acknowledge the huge tasks before you towards preparing for an excellent hosting of the sporting event especially in this period of economic downturn, I’m confident that you are capable of delivering.”
In his remarks, the chairman of UNILAG Sports Council, Professor Afolabi Lesi, said UNILAG co-hosting the games with LASU is a demonstration of the power of collaboration to foster excellence in sports among African youths.
He said the last time Nigeria hosted the 53-year old event was 20 years ago in Bauchi, noting that approximately 3,000 athletes and officials are being expected.
Lesi, who is the immediate past Provost of College of Medicine, UNILAG, Idi- Araba and now Board Chairman of Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, added that LASU will equally constitute its own committees with other committees from both institutions being expected to work together to achieve the goal of co-hosting a successful FASU.
The inaugurated committees comprises fundraising and marketing; security, technical, medical, accommodation, transportation, accreditation, media and publicity, ceremonies, feeding, volunteer, cultural and tourism, immigration and external relations, commercial/revenue generation, among others.
FASU 2024, which is 11th edition and scheduled to hold between Friday 20 and Sunday 29, September, will feature football, athletics, badminton, chess, judo, table tennis, karate, taekwondo, swimming, basketball, volleyball and handball competitions.
