The United States Diversity Visa (DV) Program commonly called the “Green Card Lottery,”  is an annual program for immigration to the United States. It remains one of the most discussed immigration pathways among Nigerians and other hopeful migrants worldwide.

Every year, thousands apply with the hope of securing permanent residency in the United States through a random selection process.

But for the 2027 cycle, several changes and delays have created confusion online. Many applicants are now asking the same question: what exactly is changing in the DV-2027 program?

According to the US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs, the Diversity Visa program still allows up to 55,000 immigrant visas annually for people from countries with historically low immigration rates to the United States.

However, the registration timeline for DV-2027 has become less predictable than previous years.

Delayed registration timeline

In November 2025, the Bureau of Consular Affairs announced that changes were being made to the DV entry process. The department stated that the start date for DV-2027 registration would be announced later, instead of following the usual early October schedule.

“We will announce the start date for the DV-2027 registration period as soon as practicable, as well as the date that DV-2027 selection results may become available through the Entry Status Check (ESC),” the department announced.

The agency also confirmed that the changes will not affect the  visa processing period for successful DV-2027 applicants that it would still run from October 1, 2026, to September 30, 2027.

This announcement immediately sparked speculation online, especially among immigrants waiting for the application window to open.

Although the US government has not released full details about all operational changes, immigration discussions across online communities suggest that tighter verification systems and updated screening measures may be part of the adjustments.

Strict application process

Despite the uncertainty, some core rules of the DV program have not changed.

The Bureau of Consular Affairs continues to emphasize that applications must be submitted electronically through the official Electronic Diversity Visa (E-DV) website. Paper applications are not accepted.

Applicants are also still limited to one entry per registration cycle. Submitting multiple entries leads to automatic disqualification.

The Department of State has also warned applicants to avoid fraud and fake agents. The application itself remains free through the official portal.

Accurate information remains critical

Incorrect personal details remain one of the leading reasons many applicants are disqualified from the DV programme each year.

According to official instructions, applicants must enter their names exactly as they appear on official documents, including passports. Mistakes involving names, dates of birth, or photographs can negatively affect eligibility.

The department also advised applicants to safely keep their confirmation numbers after submission, as selection results can only be checked through the Entrant Status Check system. Successful applicants are not notified through random emails, phone calls, or social media messages.

What Nigerians should expect

For Nigerians planning to participate in the DV-2027 process, experts advise patience and caution while awaiting official updates.

With immigration policies becoming stricter globally, the US immigration system is also undergoing additional reviews and digital reforms. While speculation continues online, applicants are encouraged to rely only on information released through official government channels such as the Bureau of Consular Affairs and the E-DV portal.

At the moment, the most significant confirmed adjustment remains the delayed registration timeline and ongoing changes to the entry process. Other claims circulating online should be treated cautiously until formally confirmed by the US government.
