According to the Met Office and WX Charts earlier wind warning, wind gusts in some areas could exceed 100 kilometres per hour, with London and other parts of the country bracing for the storm’s impact.

You may be wondering what this means, here are five key things to know about the storm and what to expect:

1. Wind Gusts Expected to Hit Up to 75 kph in London

London is preparing for strong winds as Storm Darragh intensifies, with gusts expected to peak at 75 kilometres per hour (around 46 miles per hour). According to WX Charts, the capital will experience the strongest winds around 9pm on Saturday, December 7. A weather map highlights London in dark red, almost purple, signifying severe conditions.

2. Higher Wind Gusts in Other Areas of the UK

While London braces for 75 kph gusts, other parts of the UK could face even stronger winds. Central and western regions, including parts of Wales, are marked on the weather map in dark purple and white, indicating gusts exceeding 100 kph (62 mph). These areas are likely to feel the storm’s full force.

3. Yellow Weather Warnings Issued by the Met Office

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for wind across much of the UK, starting from 3 pm today (Friday, December 6) and continuing until 6 am on Sunday, December 8. The Met Office stated: “Strong winds associated with Storm Darragh likely leading to some disruption and damage.” Residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepare for challenging conditions.

4. Possible Damage and Disruptions

The storm poses a risk of damage to buildings and infrastructure, with road and bridge closures likely in affected areas. Power cuts and disruptions to mobile service coverage are also possible as the strong winds sweep through. The Met Office advises residents to stay safe and take precautions.

5. Timing and Regional Impact

Storm Darragh’s effects will begin to be felt on Friday evening, with the strongest winds expected over the weekend. London will see its peak gusts on Saturday night, while central and western parts of the UK will likely face the harshest conditions throughout the weekend.
