UI don counsels Muslims on sustainable development

MUSLIMS have been called upon to strive for the realisation and sustenance of the mission of Islam for humanity.

Former Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan, Professor Afis Oladosu, made the call in Ibadan, Oyo State, in a lecture titled ‘Creating a Pathway for Sustainable Development: Muslim on Call’, at the 2023 delegate conference/inauguration of the new executive council of the Political Awareness Group (PAG).

According to the university teacher, the mission of Islam cannot be separated from the concept of good fortune for all mankind.

Professor Oladosu, who was represented by the Head, Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan, Professor Ibrahim Usman, stressed that Muslims are the custodians of sustainable development and as such, Islamic organisations and personalities should ensure compulsory universal education for all Muslims to banish poverty from the society and ensure decent living for all its members.

The don advised parents to equip their children with adequate knowledge for them to take their rightful positions in the future. He also encouraged those in positions of authority to mobilise for the achievement of the national sustainable development plan.

The chairman of the occasion, Senator Kola Balogun, who was represented by Alhaji Haruna Adebayo, urged the new PAG officers to run the affairs of the association with justice and fairness.

In a remark, the chairman of the PAG Board of Trustees, a former Secretary to Oyo State Government, Alhaji Waheed Olajide, advised the immediate past executives to sustain their contributions to the growth of the association. He also called on their successors to work towards taking the association to greater heights, praying Allah to assist them to succeed.

In a goodwill message, the Secretary, PAG BoT, Professor Abideen Olaiya, urged the PAG executives to improve on achievements of their predecessors and focus on the objectives of good governance and welfare for Muslims.

In an acceptance speech, the new PAG chairman in Oyo State, Dr Luqman Fasasi, promised his devotion to the service of the ummah, in collaboration with the national body of the association.

A highpoint of the event was the presentation of letters of appointment and administration of the oath of office on the new members of the executive council.
