IF anyone had propehsied that the Super Eagles of Nigeria would thrash the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, the current African champions, during the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier played in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Friday, such a person would easily have faced a credibility crisis.
From all pre-match analyses, a tight contest was predicted. The Lions are the reigning African champions and have won the crown a record five times. They are physically solid and tactically savvy.
But the Eagles outclassed them in every department of the game. With the captain, Mikel Obi; Chelsea star, Victor Moses and former Watford striker, Odion Ighalo, at their best ever, the Eagles trounced the Indomitable Lions in majestic fashion.
They scored four unreplied goals, showing the stuff that they used to be known for in the early 90s. The Eagles studied the Cameroonians for the first 10 minutes, then went for the kill thereafter. They were truly super in that game.
The African champions were rendered impotent before the horde of fans that had accompanied them to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo. Most did not even wait for the final whistle before exiting the stadium, heads bowed.
Regardless of the outcome of the return match today in Yaounde, Cameroon, the Eagles are surely going to Russia 2018. They cannot lose three matches in a row. The Cameroonian coach admitted this much. He attested to the superior firepower of the Super Eagles.
Congratulations, Super Eagles. Thank you, Gernet Rohr.
