The Taraba state government on Tuesday announced the reinforcement of a total ban on motorcycles in Jalingo, the state capital.
The state government also restricted the movement of tricycles (Keke Napep) in the town from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The Nigerian Tribune reports that late former governor Danbaba Suntai banned the use of motorcycles in Jalingo town in 2012 over insecurity being perpetrated with the use of motorcycles, while immediate past governor Darius Ishaku restricted the tricycle movement from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
In a press statement issued by the office of the secretary to the government of the state (SGS) in Taraba, the development was due to the sudden spate of criminality in the state capital.
The statement disclosed that a task force committee constituted by the state deputy governor Aminu Alkali, on behalf of Governor Kefas, directed that defaulters of the order be arrested and tried by the mobile court while their motorcycles or tricycles be confiscated and destroyed.
According to the statement, the task force committee has Taraba State Commissioner of Police Joseph Eribo as chairman, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Taraba Marshal, and the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Taraba as members, while the Secretary, Home Affairs and Special Services Department, is to serve as secretary.
